UTTARAAGAM 2024

Department of Fashion Design, Graphic Era Hill University, Dehradun hosted its Annual Fashion Presentation – “Uttaraagam’24” at Silver Jubilee Convention Centre, Graphic Era Deemed to be University, on 27th May 2024, with the theme “Sustainability -A Global Goal”. Integrating department’s vision & mission with mindfully crafted concepts, and carrying the ‘Sustainable living ’legacy forward, the vibrant presentation of Avant-garde as well as Ready-to-wear collections, represented Social, Cultural and Environmental pillars of Sustainability.

The occasion was graced by distinguished guests, which included Prof. (Dr.) Durgesh Pant, Director General of the Uttarakhand State Council for Science & Technology; Dr. Kusum Chopra, Former Chairperson of Department of Fashion Design at NIFT New Delhi; Mrs Shashi Chowdhry, Retired Professor of the Department of Fabric & Apparel Science, University of Delhi; Ms Khushi Chauhan, Founder-Designer, Khushi Chauhan Design Studio Dehradun

The evening commenced with lamp lighting ceremony, followed by a heart-warming welcome address by Prof. Dr. Sanjay Jasola, Vice Chancellor GEHU, highlighting the creative efforts of students and emphasising the inclusive spirit of the event showcased through functional clothing for specially abled children. Head of the Department, Ms Amrit Das, highlighted the achievements of department and spoke about diversity of garment ranges being presented.

Pro Vice Chancellor, GEHU Prof. (Dr.) R. Gowri also graced the occasion with her presence and proudly witnessed the event.

The presentation comprised of collections ‘Harmonic hues’, by Harpreet Kaur and Arvind Rana, which aimed to provide clothing that adds functionality as well as aesthetics in the garments for autistic children. The young designers through extensive research and experiments, combined functionality and aesthetics in weighted vests and took initiative to contribute to the society through their inclusive collection. Special thanks to Dr Shivika Mittal, Director Hopes Centre for Autism and Developmental Disabilities Dehradun, all the Teachers and little star models from Hopes, and Ginni Filaments-Delhi for sponsoring the collection; ’Ananta’ by Jigyasa Arora focused on the concept of Ardhanarishvara, the half male-half female form of Shiva and Parvati, representing the unity of masculine and feminine energies, was sponsored by Nath Brothers Pvt Ltd, Noida. ’Digital Natives’ by Ruchi Dhiman, through the use of Graffiti, drew attention towards Social media addiction and how it has disconnected the youth from

the REAL world; ’The Enchanted Soiree’ by Ishita Mittal, explored the delicacy and vibrancy of nature’s bloom through a harmonious blend of luxurious fabrics, flowy silhouettes adorned with varied forms of surface embellishment; ’Vasilea’ by Vaishnavi Gupta, presented the ethereal beauty of Renaissance era through its garments and surface embellishment. ’Drishti’ by Jyoti Sharma, sponsored by Ginni Filaments, Delhi aimed to create trendy yet comfortable clothing for visually impaired young champions. Grateful to Mr Manish Verma and the whole team of NIVH (National Institute for the empowerment of person with Visual Disabilities) for adding life to this collection. ’Trick the Fit’ by Taniya Rana aimed to create optical illusion of an ideal body shape through choice of silhouettes and digital printing on fabrics; ’Grandeza’ by Tanya Saini, an Avant-Garde collection of structured garments with laser-cut and digital printing was inspired by architect Antoni Gaudi’s creation ‘La Sagrada Familia’. ’Kalyana ‘ by Bhawna Suri, inspired by exotic and vibrant elements of Brokpa community of Dha & Hanu village in Ladakh; ’Cyberpunk’ by Sakshi Rawat blended futuristic fashion with the Punk subculture look of 80s through its structured shiny garments made from permanent heat set fabrics and vegan leather. ’Hex’ by Anjali Rana aimed to bring some solution to the forefront regarding pre-consumer textile waste; ’Nesara’ by Amisha Singh inspired by snail, represented “BIOMIMICRY ” to help provide solutions through multifunctional garments; ’Bindu’ by Stuti Jain, inspired from S H Raza’s painting series by the same name, represented five fundamentals of life. ’Navarasa’ by Niharika Kapil & Riddhi Gupta, expressed nine emotions of Kathakali through silhouettes and colours; ’Divyamm’ by Vanshika Arora inspired from Theyyam (Daivam,God), through fabrics and use of pleating, printing and hand painting, transformed the ramp into a place of deity worship. Next line of Integrated collections addressed SDGs of Responsible consumption and production, Reduced Inequality and Gender Equality. ’MorphoMod’ a modular fashion collection incorporated clothing with reversible designs, adjustable components, and multifunctional features, prioritizing both comfort and innovation; ‘Samatva’ tried to bridge the gap between slow fashion and fast fashion; ‘Equitas’ attempted to create a balance between the masculine and feminine energies, the yin-yang of nature, thereby creating a sustainable world. Esteemed jury members of the glittering evening were Dr. Kusum Chopra, Former Chairperson, Department of Fashion Design at NIFT New Delhi and Mrs Shashi Chowdhry, Retired Professor-Department of Fabric & Apparel Science, University of Delhi.

The presentation was judged by a distinguished panel of fashion industry experts, comprising of Ms Khushi Chauhan, Founder-Designer, Khushi Chauhan Designer Studio and Mr Prateek Chaturvedi, Fashion Category Head, Smart Bazaar, UP West & Uttarakhand.
