On March 11, 2023, Graphic Era Hill University’s School of Law organized a visit to Dehradun district jail, Prison Sudhowala in Uttarakhand. The aim was to familiarize students with prison administration and the concept of correctional institutions. Around a hundred students along with HOD(SOL) Dr. Shalini Bahuguna, Nishtha Kohli, Anupama Thakur, Ankita Jakhmola obtained special permission to explore the prison’s setup, infrastructure, and prisoner treatment. They visited male and female cells, including juvenile and solitary confinement rooms, observing the conditions and facilities provided. Vocational workshops were also explored, where inmates engaged in various activities. The visit enhanced students’ practical knowledge of the reformative approach in Indian prisons and shed light on the challenges faced by undertrial prisoners. The prison authorities, along with the Senior Superintendent, addressed students’ queries, providing deeper insights into the prison system’s functioning. The visit offered valuable understanding of prisons as pillars of the criminal justice system.
